The Government Printing Department (GPD) was established in 1974. The
ex-terminal building of an old Airport was renovated to become the GPD's building with the
floor area of 1,800 square meters. It was located at Jalan Berakas about 3 kilometers away
from Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei Darussalam.
Since its first establishment, a Government Printer headed the GPD. Then the post of
the Government Printer was given a new name, known as, the Director of Printing. At that
time, the department had a work force of around 30 employees.
The general responsibility and administration for the GPD lied with the Ministry of Law
starting from 1 January 1984. However from the 24 June 1998 until today, the Prime
Minister's Office is now responsible for the general administration and management of GPD.
With the growing demands of the government's printed materials over the years, the
department has increased its capacity on equipment, floor areas as well as manpower. The
department now has six blocks of building with a floor area of nearly 10,000 square meters
occupying a land area of 6.5 acres. The workforce has increased to 280 employees with new
varieties of printing equipment to provide all in-house printing requirements.
